Another former Fiji military officer has been made a minister in the interim regime.

A former Deputy Commander, Colonel Samuela Saumatua, has been sworn in as the interim local government minister.

The interim prime minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, recommended his appointment as part of efforts to raise the level and quality of service to the public.

The minister was sworn in by the acting President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau.

The interim regime has also said it will appoint a president within the next week, but no name of any candidate has been given.

The regime has not ruled out that Commodore Bainimarama will take up the post which he claimed to hold for several weeks after the 2006 military coup.
