The secretary to Vanuatu's outgoing President Kalkot Mataskelekele says he will be nominated for a second term in response to popular demand.

Mr Mataskelekele's five-year term as President ended last weekend.

An Electoral College made up of the 52 members of parliament and the heads of the six provincial governments is preparing to elect a new Head of State on September 1st.

The secretary, Selwyn Leodoro, says the 10 signatures required under Vanuatu law to support a nomination for president have been collected for Mr Mataskelekele.

It is believed a number of political parties are keen for him to run again as President.
