Guam speaker exhorts Marshall Islands women to seek public office

12:09 pm on 25 August 2009

The speaker of the Guam legislature, Judith Won Pat, has called on Marshall Islands women to run for public office and get involved in seeking solutions to problems.

Speaking to the annual conference of the group, Women United Together Marshall Islands, she said women should consider public service or elected office.

Judith Won Pat says women bring meaningful, real-life experience to the table and claiming not to be ready is not a good reason not to run for office.

Guam's first female speaker is visiting the Marshall Islands, which has only one woman in the 33-seat parliament.

Since constitutional government was established in the former American territory in 1979, there has never been more than one woman in the Marshall Islands parliament.
