Three convicted top officials in the Northern Marianas have been flown out of Saipan to begin serving their jail term in a US federal prison.

Former lieutenant governor Timothy Villagomez, his sister Joaquina Santos and her husband, former Commerce Secretary James Santos, left for a yet undisclosed destination which will only be made public once they have arrived.

The three have been jailed for seven and six years in prison respectively for defrauding a publicly-owned utility company.

They have also lodged an appeal.
