Fiji emergency rule expected to be extended for another four months

The Fiji military-led regime is likely to extend restrictions on media and public meetings until the end of the year at least.

Fijilive reports the government spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Neumi Leweni, as saying the Public Emergency Regulations will be extended for another month, and could be in place for the rest of the year, at least.

Lt-Col Leweni claims Fiji as a whole has benefited from the restrictions which had been re-imposed in April when the then president Ratu Josefa Iloilo said he had abrogated the constitution.

Under the regulations, police, military and civil servants have the powers to stop events they deem to be a threat to the country's security.

This has included the Methodist Church's annual conference and its choir festival planned for this month.
