Positive public feedback on Solomon Islands political stability bill

2:03 pm on 4 September 2009

A Solomon Islands government working group on a bill aimed at stabilising the country's political landscape says public feedback has been very positive.

The Political Parties Integrity Bill, accompanied by the Enabling Constitutional Amendment Bill, go before parliament at the end of the month and are undergoing public consultation over the next couple of weeks.

The committee's chairperson, John Keniapisia, says in the past thirty years a weak party system has created political instability and allowed politicians to behave badly.

"At the moment I'm not hearing anything very different that is offered in terms of constructive criticism and in fact there's no strong criticism against the idea. In fact what we've been getting out there is people wanted these changes to the Solomon Islands political system and the conduct of political parties has been stagnant and we should go for new things, we should try new ideas, we should change according to the circumstances in which society has been changed"

John Keniapisia says public feedback on the bills will be presented to the government caucus and any substantial, constructive amendments will be made at that stage.
