Relocation programme for Carteret Islanders to Bougainville's main island almost at standstill

The relocation project to move Carteret Islanders to Bougainville is said to be almost at a standstill due to a lack in funds.

For years the people of the Carteret Islands have been wanting to leave their flood prone atolls to move to Tinputz on Bougainville.

A spokesperson for a Papua New Guinea NGO, Tulele Peisa, which is overseeing the resettlement, Ursula Rakova says so far five people from five families have relocated to the site.

She says plans are in place for a further 45 people from the respective families to make their move by the end of this month.

But Ms Rakova says while the five have resettled comfortably, those who remain on the Caterets are becoming frustrated by the long wait and severe lack of food and resources.

"The main obstacle is lack of financial support from anyone to help us relocate and progress this process further. We are not getting financial support from anyone except the fundraising that we do locally."

Ursula Rakova says there's no recognition from the Bougainville government for the relocation programme and the people of the Caterets are feeling angry and anxious with the issue.
