Alcohol sale ban ahead of road switch in Samoa

11:00 am on 7 September 2009

The temporary ban on the sale of alcohol goes into affect in Samoa from tonight to help ensure a safe change in which side of the road the nation drives on.

The three day ban on alcohol sales does not affect restaurants, bars and hotels.

But those sales will be strictly for people who dine out or hotel guests.

Alcohol will be back on sale and nightclubs will re-open on Thursday.

But clubs will be required to close at ten at night instead of midnight.

The police have started using breathalyzer devices to check drivers under the influence after a law was passed in Parliament recently to legalize the use of breathalyzers in the country for the first time.
