The acting director of the Vanuatu Fisheries Department, Robert Jimmy, says a waste treatment system has been set up as part of the project of a fish processing plant near Port Vila.
The comment follows queries by different NGOs in Port Vila over the Chinese-Vanuatu venture.
Mr Jimmy says after studies by the Secretariat of the Pacific Commission, the Vanuatu government has advertised the position of a consultant to make a full environmental assessment of the plant.
He says the government is ready to welcome the consultant to complete the assessment before the plant can start operations at the end of this year or early next year.
