New warnings about New Caledonia's Vale Inco plant

A New Caledonian union group, FO, has given a file about alleged problems at a major nickel plant to the territorial government and the administration of the southern province.

The group has warned of major problems with the Vale Inco plant in the territory's south, saying there is a risk of incidents of more serious nature than the acid spill in April.

According to Noumea's daily newspaper, the union delegation says it is satisfied with the meeting it has had with the authorities.

In a statement, the company has dismissed the claims, saying its rate of incidents is lower than the national average.
