The French Government is to help build a nursing facility for the elderly in Vanuatu's capital Port Vila.

Under the agreement, France will donate 15 000 euros to the construction of the centre.

The French Welfare Association of Vanuatu's Jacqueline de Gaillande says the seniors house will be the first structure of its type in Vanuatu.

She says the centre will be well integrated into Melanesian custom and will welcome sick and semi-dependent seniors for variable length stays, depending on their condition.

There will also be a dispensary at the centre.
