Port Vila Municipal council in Vanuatu dissolved after alleged misconduct of mayor

Vanuatu's minister of internal affairs has dissolved the Port Vila Municipal council over the alleged involvement of its mayor, Paul Avock, in the death of a 12 year boy.

Daren Firiam, a friend of Mr Avock's son, was ejected from the back of the double cabin truck when the mayor, who was driving, tried to avoid a pot hole in the middle of the road last week.

The Minister, Patrick Crowly's decision follows public criticism over the conduct of the mayor.

Reports say Mr Avock was at that time of the incident allegedly under the influence of alcohol.

Police have already laid a criminal charge against him for careless driving.

A court hearing date for Mr Avock's trial has not been set.
