12:58 pm on 14 September 2009

A speed boat, which will be used for travel between the Manu'a Island group in American Samoa, has now left Florida on board a container vessel.

The Governor, Togiola Tulafono, says the container vessel will take the shipment to California where another container vessel will be secured to bring the speed boat to Pago Pago.

Once in the territory, the boat, which can carry up to 25 people, will undergo U.S. Coast Guard certification.

Currently, residents of the Manu'a islands use small alia boats to travel between the islands.

The small boats are considered unsafe but there have been no recorded incidents, so far.
