Vanuatu publisher apologises over education policy claim

10:35 am on 16 September 2009

The publisher of Vanuatu's Daily Post news paper, Marc Neil Jones, has apologised to the education minister, Charlot Salwai, for a misleading article about the new government policy on free primary school education from next year.

Mr Neil-Jones said in his article that the new policy is putting English learners at risk.

Mr Salwai asked Mr Neil Jones to see him and told him that the policy is not about English or French speakers but about improving the curriculum and the level of teaching.

He says today both systems are facing problems, making all Vanuatu children victims.

The minister says the number of students entering university in English or French is very low and it's the duty of the government to give free education at the primary level and to provide good training to the teachers.
