Fiji's Bainimarama off to UN General Assembly

3:17 pm on 21 September 2009

Fiji's interim prime minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, is among the leaders attending this week's UN General Assembly.

Commodore Bainimarama is expected to address the General Assembly on developments in Fiji and present his regime's roadmap to democracy in 2014.

While in New York, Commodore Bainimarama is also expected to meet the Commonwealth Secretary General Kamalesh Sharma, just weeks after Fiji's suspension from the body.

According to Fijivillage, Commodore Bainimarama hopes the Commonwealth will assist Fiji in creating a new constitution.

The last constitution was drawn up under the leadership of Sir Paul Reeves, who visited Fiji this month as the Commonwealth's special envoy.

It was abrogateed last April.
