Police in New Caledonia have recaptured one of the two inmates who last week escaped from the Noumea prison.

The 22-year-old man, who was serving a sentence for violent robbery, was arrested near Boulouparis on the west coast of the main island.

Police say he offered no resistance.

11 inmates have escaped from the Noumea jail this year, which the union of the correctional staff says is a French record.
