Cannery guest workers to remain another week

10:11 am on 26 September 2009

The remaining guest workers from the closing Samoa Packing cannery in American Samoa will not be returning to Samoa until after the cannery has closed next week.

A cannery official says they decided to delay the departure of the second group because they were low on manpower to meet orders before the closing date.

The first group of 104 guest workers departed for Samoa last Thursday and the rest were to return yesterday.

Asked how employees are receiving news of the government's plan to purchase the Samoa Packing plant, the official said there's been no announcement made to employees and they are winding down their work without any expectations that the cannery will be reopened.

The closing date is still September 30 and a farewell ceremony at the Veterans Memorial Stadium is scheduled for October 7.
