A French Polynesian court official has been detained after he was found to have been selling confiscated drugs which the Papeete court kept as evidence.

This practice came to light when police were called to a domestic dispute and found marijuana whose owner revealed that it had been supplied by an official.

Investigations show that after taking the drugs, he put dry grass in the bags and then applied the official seals.

According to media reports, the thefts have been going on all year and earned the suspect thousands of dollars.

He is now facing dismissal and could be jailed for up to five years.
