Final decision in Solomons PM defamation case outstanding

2:09 pm on 6 October 2009

The Solomon Islands High Court says a final decision has yet to be made in a defamation case involving the prime minister, the secretary to cabinet and the Island Sun newspaper.

The prime minister, Dr Derek Sikua, and the secretary to cabinet, Jeremiah Manele, are suing the Island Sun newspaper for alleged defamation.

The article in question, published late last year, alleged Dr Sikua and Mr Manele became drunk while attending the United Nations General Assembly in New York and misbehaved at a hotel.

The allegations are being denied by the two politicians.

The high court says it made an interim decision asking the paper to reveal its source.
