Ten huge generators have arrived in American Samoa this morning, to help boost the electricity supply following the tsunami two weeks ago.

The shipment arrived at Pago Pago International Airport on board the largest aircraft in the world, the Antonov Airlines' AN-225 charter aircraft.

Antonov Airlines operates charter cargo services between the Ukraine and the United States.

Last Friday, the US Department of Transportation granted the foreign carrier an emergency exemption to operate the single flight transporting 10 generator sets and parts and equipment.

Antonov Airlines said the generators were needed urgently to assist in relief and humanitarian efforts after the earthquake and tsunami.

No other commercial US carrier could accommodate the generators, which each weighs more than 12,000 kilos.
