Call for hearing on emergency response plans in American Samoa

A lawmaker in American Samoa has called for the House of Representatives to conduct a hearing on the emergency response plans for a disaster such as last month's tsunami.

House member, Maugaoali'i Anoai, says it's important the government tells the Fono about the emergency response already in place, as well as any alarm system being planned.

Representative, Taotasi Archie Soliai, said an island wide alarm system could have saved more lives during the tsunami disaster.

He said while residents receive advance warning and can act when a hurricane is approaching, a tsunami can hit quickly without enough time to take evacuation measures.

Maugaoali'i, who is the chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, has been given the task of planning such a hearing this week or next week.
