Vanuatu's Torba provincial government is about to submit an evaucation plan to the national Disaster Management Office in Port Vila, in case the Gaua volcanic eruption worsens.

The volcano has been erupting for the past month and the alert level was recently raised to two on the five point scale.

The assistant secretary of the province, Christopher Makenzy, says that following a visit to Gaua last week, a decision was made that five villages from the northwest of the island would have to be evacuated in the event of bigger eruption.

He says villages on the eastern side could provide temporary accommodation.
