The Honiara High Court has been told that the 7,000 US dollar Terminal Grant awarded to spouses of Members of the Solomon Islands parliament by the Parliamentary Entitlement Commission is unconstitutional.

The hearing about the controversial grant was presided by the Chief Justice, Justice Sir Albert Palmer.

The lawyer acting for the commission said it used its powers under Section 69 of the constitution.

But the the Deputy Solicitor General, Steven Woods, said the section in question makes no mention of a spouse.

The hearing is continuing.
