Felony charges for top American Samoa officials over fake licence

2:07 pm on 28 October 2009

Felony charges have been brought in American Samoa against the former deputy Commissioner of Public Safety, Filifatali Mike Fuiava, and the former Manager of the Office of Motor Vehicles, Marie Ripley.

Mrs Ripley, who is the wife of the territory's Attorney General, faces forgery and corruption charges.

Mr Fuiava is charged with tampering with physical evidence and hindering the prosecution.

It's alleged that Mrs Ripley prepared and issued a driver's licence for a Tongan citizen using a social security number of another person.

This fake licence was later detected in another department and reported to the Department of Public Safety, but it is alleged that Mr Fuiava tried to stop officers from investigating the case.
