The US Coast Guard's recovery of hazardous material from American Samoa's Pago Pago harbour following the recent devastating tsunami has been completed.

An official with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, James Shebl, says five vehicles were recovered from the harbour during the clean-up operation, carried out by a Hawaii based contractor, American Marine corp.

Using dive and sonar equipment, the crew also fished up a drum full of motor oil, several five gallon cans of paint, a small generator and an old cargo shipping container.

Mr Shebl says the container will be examined for any hazardous material.
