The United States President Barak Obama has signed a bill which will entitle federal employees in American Samoa to Cost of Living Adjustments or COLA pay.
The provision was included in the National Defense Authorization Act of Fiscal Year 2010.
Under the new law, federal employees in all Territories and possessions, including American Samoa, will transition to locality pay.
In addition the bill requires the US Department of Labor to conduct separate surveys to determine any pay disparity for the territories including American Samoa.
If there is such pay disparity, a separate locality pay for American Samoa's to be established.
American Samoa's Congressman, Faleomavaega Eni Hunkin, says the bill signals an important turn in the history of federal service in American Samoa.
He thanked President Obama and his colleagues in Congress, for recognizing the need to give fair treatment to federal employees in American Samoa.
