Fiji interim regime says US report on religion is wrong

Fiji's interim government has condemned a US State Department Report which says religious freedom in Fiji has suffered in the past year.

The International Religious Freedom Report says the nationwide Christian crusade by the Police Commissioner, Esala Teleni, and the New Methodist Church, has made it compulsory for police staff and their families to attend the church's gatherings, regardless of their faith.

The interim government spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Neumi Leweni, says the report is wrong.

"That's totally false. There has been no one forced to practice any other religion and that report is totally false. It's a matter of choice."

Neumi Leweni says the new direction taken by the police has resulted in a significant drop in the crime rate and will continue.
