Rampaging soldiers in Papua New Guinea have reportedly burnt down a Sunday School classroom and seriously injured three young men in Morobe Province.

Eyewitnesses told the Post Courier newspaper the soldiers from Lae city's Igam Barracks beat up the young men at the squatter settlement next door last week in retaliation for the assault of an off duty soldier.

Three youths were treated at Angau hospital in Lae, for injuries including severe head wounds, internal wounds, a broken ankle and broken hand.

Four other youths suffered bush knife wounds.

An eye witness says the incident happened after an off-duty soldier who was allegedly drunk, attacked a young man at the market opposite the barrack's gate.
