The Caledonian Union has concluded its annual congress by reelecting Charles Pidjot as its president.

At the party's 40th Congress in Pouebo, Mr Pidjot secured about 85 percent of the votes.

The party is a key component of the pro-independence FLNKS movement.

It will run a list linked to the FLNKS in next month's provincial election in the Loyalty Islands which were called after the French supreme court annulled the May poll results because of irregularities with proxy votes.

According to the local newspaper, the Caledonian Union says it is prepared to share power with other pro-independence sides after the election.
