People from throughout the South Pacific hoping to live in America are being warned to watch out for Green Card Lottery scams.
The US Consulate in Auckland says unsolicited emails saying people have won a visa in a promotion are likely to be a straight forward scam.
Officially called the Diversity Visa Programme, the Green Card Lottery issues visas to 55,000 people from countries with low immigration to the United States, which includes most Pacific nations.
Basic requirements must be met and all qualified entries have an equal random chance of being approved, once applicants are interviewed at the Consulate.
The 2011 programme deadline is in just over two week's time
