Flosse lawyer hopeful French Polynesia leader will be out of prison within days

4:36 pm on 16 November 2009

The lawyer acting for French Polynesia's jailed veteran politician, Gaston Flosse, has withdrawn an urgent request to have his client freed immediately.

Francois Quinquis now says he trusts that the custodial judge in Papeete will keep a promise that Mr Flosse will be held for two weeks only.

This period is to allow the investigators to carry out confrontations with other suspects in the OPT corruption probe.

The prosecution, however, says Mr Flosse can be held for up to four months.

The La Depeche newspaper says it's uncertain how long he will be in prison because the judge's promise isn't spelled out in the document issued at the time of his detention.
