The authorities in the Indonesian province of Papua have announced they will step up security for the anniversary of Papua today.

In Mimika Regency, police say it will prepare around 400 joint personnel from the police and military.

The head of Mimika Resort Police say the issue of raising the Morning Star flag by separatist groups has been widely circulating in Timika.

He says the joint police-military troops have been briefed.

The raising of the Morning Star flag in Papua has been outlawed.
