Samoa chief judge refuses bail application for Ropati Nauer

The man who who fled Samoa for New Zealand seven years ago after being found guilty of one count of manslaughter has been refused bail.

Ropati Nauer escaped Samoa's judiciary while on bail before the court delivered a sentence against him.

The 35 year old's lawyer made the bail application when Nauer appeared yesterday for the first time before the chief judge, Patu Falefatu Sapolu.

Nauer was arrested by Interpol authorities and deported back from New Zealand on November 18.

The court has set December 17 for a probation report and sentencing.

Meanwhile the Police Commissioner, Lilomaiava Fou Taioalo, says additional charges against Nauer will be laid after he is sentenced on the manslaughter charge.
