American Samoa's governor looks at standards for hiring police officers

American Samoa's governor plans to send to the Fono in January a proposal to set the standards of certification and the hiring of police officers for the Department of Public Safety.

DPS personnel have complained of past incidents where newly hired officers received quick promotions and pay hikes, while veteran officers continued to wait in the wings.

In September this year, Police Commissioner Tuaolo Fruean told lawmakers he had discussed with Governor Togiola Tulafono the setting of standards for certification and hiring of police officers under a program called POST, or Police Officer Standards and Training.

The purpose of POST is to establish minimum uniform standards for the employment and training of police officers.
