Vanuatu speaker faces motion as PM tries to stay on

Vanuatu's finance minister, Sela Molisa, has deposited a motion against the speaker of parliament, Maxime Carlot Korman, with the minister of Internal affairs, Moana Carcasses Kalosil.

This comes amid a complex dispute between the speaker and the prime minister, Edward Natapei, that is before the Supreme Court.

The speaker declared the prime minister's seat vacant last week but a stay order has left Mr Natapei in power.

Under the constitution, the speaker is elected by parliament and only the parliament has the power to remove him through a motion.

Mr Molisa says the speaker's decision to allow a no confidence motion against Mr Natapei to be debated next week goes against his decision to have him vacate his seat.
