Fiji's Bainimarama headed to Copenhagen

2:09 pm on 7 December 2009

Fiji's interim Prime Minister will attend the United Nations climate change conference in Copenhagen.

Commodore Frank Bainimarama told Fiji Live climate change is a serious concern for Fiji.

He says the rise in sea levels will affect low lying areas in Fiji and the Pacific, leading to the displacement of people and migration which could cause social and economic problems.

He says food security is a very serious issue for Fiji and other Pacific countries because unusually wet or dry conditions can affect their food supply.

The Commodore left Fiji at the weekend on board Air Pacific's inaugural flight to Hong Kong, and is accompanied by officials from the Department of the Environment.
