Vanuatu speaker accepts motion but plans to resign

4:11 pm on 9 December 2009

The speaker of the Vanuatu parliament, Maxime Carlot Korman, has now accepted the motion filed by the government against him but says he will rather resign than face it.

Mr Carlot Korman says two motions that are listed to be debated this and next week, with the challenge of the prime minister, Edward Natapei, scheduled to be debated tomorrow afternoon.

Earlier, he refused to accept the motion challenging him but he now says that it can be tabled on Tuesday.

But Mr Carlot Korman says he cannot accept its content and will rather step down.

If he resigns, the minister of finance who is the mover of the motion will have no option but to withdraw it.
