Vanuatu police chief issues warning to Australian Federal Police advisors

9:43 pm on 9 December 2009

Vanuatu's Police Commissioner, Joshua Bong, has warned Australian Federal Police officers currently in his country as advisors within the Vanuatu Police Force not to interfere with internal issues of his force.

Commissioner Bong called the AFP advisers to his office last week and asked them to concentrate on their assigned duties as advisors.

The warning comes amid claims that AFP officers have been interferring in the inquest over the death of an escaped prisoner, John Bule, at Port Vila Central Hospital this year.

It's alleged that Bule died after he was severely beaten by the police during his capture.

The inquest over the death of Bule is in its third week and seniors officers of the Police Force including Commissioner Bong have been summoned as witnesses.
