Tonga may be offered up to ten medical school scholarships by Cuba next year, after three students were sent earlier this year.
This was one of the outcomes of a visit to the Caribbean country last week by Tonga's Prime Minister Dr Feleti Sevele.
Dr Sevele met the three students who started pre-med studies in Cuba in October.
He also held discussions with Cuba's Vice Minister for Sports over possible co-operation, such as providing coaches to help with the development of boxing in Tonga.
The meeting also aimed to further strengthen diplomatic ties between Tonga and Cuba.
There have also been discussions on the possibility of Cuban doctors helping with the delivery of health services in Tonga.
Vanuatu, Kiribati, Tuvalu, Nauru and Solomon Islands are among the region's countries to use Cuban doctors.
