Fiji Red Cross fears disease outbreak after cyclone

1:44 pm on 16 December 2009

The Red Cross in Fiji fears an outbreak of water borne diseases in areas flooded after Cyclone Mick.

The disaster coordinator Vuli Gauna says it's believed several thousand people lost their homes and belongings in the storm.

The Red Cross is involved in Fiji's Disaster Management Committee or DISMAC.

He says they are now closely monitoring areas which suffered extensive flooding, such as Nausori and Navua, to prevent an outbreak.

"The water borne diseases normally come up very easily after flooding, so it's the areas that have been exposed to flooding that we are monitoring with DISMAC officials and the Ministry of Health here to ensure that there is no threat of any possible outbreak."
