The Supreme Court in Samoa has sentenced Ropati Nauer to seven years jail for a manslaughter conviction dating back to December 2001.

The man had fled to New Zealand while awaiting sentence but was finally located by Interpol last month.

Nauer had denied the manslaughter charge after a 20 year old girl was killed when she jumped out from his vehicle at night, however a panel of assessors found him guilty.

The chief judge, Patu Falefatu Sapolu, in his ruling says the seven year sentence is appropriate and it sends an important message that the court would not tolerate criminal activities which affect the lives of women in the country.
