New Caledonia's court of appeal will release its verdict next week over a request by the jailed union leader, Gerard Jodar, to be freed immediately.

Jodar has been back in court to plead for his release from the Camp Est jail where he has been serving a nine-month sentence for his role in the violence during an airline strike at Noumea's domestic airport last May.

He has told the court that he is neither a bandit nor a delinquent but an activist.

Jodar also says he plans to go as far as the European human rights court to denounce the conditions in the jail, which is the most is overcrowded prison run by France.
