American Samoa checks hundreds of immigration files

7:22 am on 9 January 2010

A search warrant has been executed at American Samoa's Immigration Office for the immigration files of 750 Asians, including Chinese, South Korean and Filipino citizens.

Their immigration records are being searched as part of an alleged embezzlement and stealing scheme at the Attorney General's Office, which also includes the forging of Certificates of Identity used to travel to the United States and other countries.

There are also suspicions that American Samoa's 30-day entry permit system is being used for human trafficking and Asian owned corporations in the territory may be behind the scheme.

The Immigration Office was closed all day as the search warrant was executed.
