The French high commissioner in French Polynesia, Adolphe Colrat, has forced the immediate dismissal of a senior French administrator for suspected nepotism.
According to a statement, the administrator of the Leeward and Windward Islands, Ghyslain Chatel, has quit his functions.
He has been accused of showing poor judgment in helping ensure his uncle was being given a consultant's job with the Moorea town hall.
Mr Colrat has described this as unacceptable as the public authorities have to show a good example.
He says he has advised the minister of overseas territories and the interior minister that Mr Chatel should be removed from his position, which he took up in 2008.
