Cooks finance minister cool about no confidence talk

1:04 pm on 13 January 2010

The Cook Islands Minister of Finance says MPs calling for a no confidence vote need to consult the constitution.

Some members of parliament are calling on the Queen's Representative to convene an urgent parliamentary sitting for a vote of no confidence in the Prime Minister, Jim Marurai.

But Wilkie Rasmussen says such a move isn't possible without breaching the nation's party hopping law which he says was passed in 2007.

"That law says no member particularly of the government can vote against the government when it comes to a vote of no confidence and appropriation. They simply cannot, it's just illogical for them to do so."

Cabinet is meeting today to discuss the possible suspension of the Secretary of Finance among other matters.
