Indonesian police say gunmen have attacked a convoy of buses near the world's largest gold mine in Papua, wounding seven people including an American.

A Papua police spokesman, Col. Agus Rianto, says the convoy was attacked as it traveled from the Grasberg mine to the town of Timika.

He said those wounded included four policemen and a child.

A spokesman in Indonesia for Freeport, the mine operator, confirmed the attack but refused to give further details pending verification.

Col Rianto says foreigner and two policemen were evacuated to Jakarta for treatment.

The mine has been repeatedly targeted with arson, roadside bombs and blockades since production began in the 1970s.
