Fiji needs constitution with non-race based electoral system says Commerce Chamber

Fiji needs a constitution with a non-race based electoral system says the Fiji Chamber of Commerce.

The Chamber was responding to interim Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama's call for a new Fiji by 2014.

The Chamber's President Swani Maharaj says the race issue remains a major obstacle and needs to be addressed under a new constitution.

He told Radio Fiji he thinks the important factor is that the government is committed in putting up a constitution, with one vote, one value.

Mr Maharaj says the government is adamant that everybody should be given equal opportunity whether Indian, Fijian, European, part European or Solomon Islander.

He says he thinks that the government under the leadership of Commodore Bainimarama is committed to that.

But he says it's unfortunate Australia and New Zealand do not appreciate that factor.
