PNG phone porn sparks fatal battle

A second man has died in a tribal battle in Papua New Guinea that was sparked by pornographic pictures sent via a mobile phone.

The newspaper, The National, reports police say the fight started on Saturday between clans in Tari, in Southern Highlands province.

They say it was sparked by a man from the Tapo clan who caused offence by showing pornographic pictures on his phone to a young woman from the Pipi clan.

The brother of the young woman was killed in the initial fighting, and police say an innocent bystander died yesterday when he was dragged from his car and axed to death.

The police say they lack the manpower and firepower to stop the fight, which has now escalated with several houses burnt down and many injuries from gun and axe wounds.

The police are appealing for the area to be declared a fighting zone as it could be a security concern to the16 billion US dollar liquefied natural gas project.
