Call for American Samoa donations to go towards medical costs

An American Samoan Senator, Mauga Tasi Asuega, has recommended that funds donated for the September disaster be used to defray medical costs of people who were injured or fallen ill from the tsunami.

Mauga made the recommendation to the Governor's Authorised Representative, Evelyn Vaitautolu Langford, during a Senate hearing .

"I know of some family, right now they still sitting at home and some are still at the hospital waiting for some money so they can go off-island; broken bones and what not that can't be done here."

The hearing has been told that none of the 488,000 US dollars in monetary donations has been spent.

Two projects being considered are payment of delinquent accounts for tsunami victims and the purchase of building materials for families who suffered substantial damages to their homes but did not qualify for enough federal emergency assistance to rebuild.
