New scheme allowing Fiji's tourists to claim tax refund

Tourists to Fiji can now claim a tax refund when they depart on daily purchases of at least 255 US dollars.

The Fiji Islands Revenue and Customs Authority has launched the Tourist VAT Refund Scheme, saying visitors can claim their refund at the ANZ at Nadi International Airport and at Suva Wharf.

Its CEO Sitoko Tikolevu says refunds will only be given for purchases from registered VAT outlets.

He says the scheme has many benefits.

"This is one of those initiatives fuelled by government to try to continue the push to promote tourism industry in Fiji. Apart from this there was also reduction in duty of goods, tourist goods, for example cameras, recording goods and the like."

Sitoko Tikolevu says the scheme won't apply to Fiji citizens and passport holders, or foreigners working in Fiji.
